Empathy

Empathy Training for Healthcare Professionals

With Judith Orloff, MD

Description:

In this two-hour workshop participants will learn what empathy is and discover tools to cultivate it. Dr. Orloff will demonstrate ways to empathically communicate with patients and team members by using empathic listening techniques and empathy statements.

Dr. Orloff will also discuss the four different types of empathy, and common causes of burnout, the drain from having “too much empathy” including how to reverse this to achieve more balance. She will describe how over-giving or “feeling too much” can cause a sense of being overwhelmed that isn’t healthy. She will teach participants how to identify draining people, who are empathy deficient, including signs that their energy is being sapped, and discuss strategies to effectively deal with them. Dr. Orloff will end the workshop with a Q&A session.
